Place & story
An estate school open across creeds
Edmund McGildowney’s will of 1832 left £200 to support a schoolmaster at Ballyvoy. The teaching was to cover reading, writing and arithmetic without distinctions of religious creed. The resulting annuity continued through later generations of the family. Correspondence about the school’s proposed closure in 1934 raised questions about ownership of the building and the endowment’s status after the estate had been sold. Carey Historical Society recovered this history from the legal papers. [2]
Carey Faughs and their first trophy
Carey Faughs, based in Ballyvoy, were founded in 1903 by Dennis Maguire and Patrick Moore with the assistance of Father Eardly. Their first full season brought victory over Glenarm in the Glens Feis final and possession of the Shield of the Heroes, which appears on the club crest. In 1906 Carey became the first North Antrim team to win the county hurling championship. Further county titles followed in 1916 and 1923. [3] [4]
Barnish’s shared classrooms
Barnish Primary School in Ballyvoy developed a partnership with Straidbilly lasting more than twenty years. Staff planned lessons together, shared resources and appointed a shared teacher. Pupils took part in joint work in physical education, literacy and personal development. Straidbilly’s account recalls children learning and playing alongside their Barnish friends. Barnish closed in 2021, after which Straidbilly formed a new shared-education partnership with other schools. [5]
