Place & story
Grain, linen and cattle
Omagh’s market house had been built in 1830, and its shambles opened in 1834, according to Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account of the town. Grain and vegetables were sold in the market house. Saturday markets supplied provisions, with brown linen offered on alternate Saturdays, while cattle fairs took place on the first Saturday of each month. Lewis also describes a newspaper reading room, giving a glimpse of the town’s shared facilities alongside its commercial life. [2]
