Place & story

Changes recorded in the county report

Ballygowan’s population fell from 143 in 1881 to ninety-four in 1891. The 1901 report carried forward a footnote attributing that earlier decrease to emigration and people moving away. By 1901 the total had risen to 109: sixty males and forty-nine females. The earlier explanation does not account for this later increase. [2]

The Scarva district townland

In 1901, twenty-two of Ballygowan’s twenty-six houses were inhabited and four were empty. Its census headings identify Aghaderg parish, the upper half of Upper Iveagh barony and Scarva electoral division within Banbridge Union. This locates a separate Ballygowan from the townlands of that name in Moira and Drumbeg. [2]
