Place & story
Saint Patrick’s and the grotto
Saint Patrick's Church dates to 1859. Its T-shaped plan, limestone entrance gable, diagonal buttresses and bellcote give it a distinctive outline at the southern end of the village. A stained-glass window comes from the Harry Clarke studio. The village grotto was blessed in 1957 and became a local meeting point, supplementing the church's religious and social role.[2]
The holiday-cottage scheme
Puckane was the first North Tipperary village selected for twelve Rent an Irish Cottage units in the early 1970s. The development encouraged a craft shop north of the village. These holiday cottages belong to a modern tourism initiative and should be distinguished from older vernacular houses, many of which retained timber windows, traditional doors and slate roofs when surveyed in 2007.[2]
People & connections
Shane MacGowan’s childhood connection
The council's village design statement records that songwriter Shane MacGowan spent much of his childhood here and drew on local places in his songs. It establishes a childhood association with the area, rather than a claim that he was born in the village. No song lyrics are needed to recognise that connection between a small Tipperary community and a widely heard musical career.[2]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
