Oileán na gCoiníní
The original census records the island community separately from neighbouring Fergus islands.
These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
The 1901 census counted forty-four inhabitants on Coney Island, twenty-three male and twenty-one female. Eleven of its twelve houses were occupied and one was empty. The population had been seventy in 1881 and forty-eight in 1891, with fourteen and eleven houses respectively. A footnote attached to the 1891 figures attributed that earlier decrease to emigration and removals; it does not explain the subsequent change to 1901. [2]
Coney appears among the islands in the River Fergus, under Killadysert parish and Kilchreest electoral division in Killadysert Union. Its recorded area was 262 acres, two roods and twelve perches. The same table gives separate entries for neighbouring islands, including Inishmacowney, so their inhabitants are not included in Coney’s population. [2]
Census figures refer to the matched historical census area for each year. Boundaries and spellings can change over time.
