Place & story
A school built in 1943
Rathpeacon National School dates its original building to 1943, on a site beside the later school. Construction of its replacement began in 2002, and pupils moved on 1 October 2003. The new premises initially provided seven mainstream classrooms, support rooms, a sports hall and a sensory room. Increasing enrolment brought another four classrooms in a two-storey extension, occupied in September 2013. These recorded moves show how provision changed across successive generations of local pupils. [2]
A farmhouse and its working surroundings
A farmhouse in Rathpeacon, dated by the architectural inventory to about 1910, retains a balanced three-bay frontage, sash windows and a slate roof with brick chimneys. Decorative roughcast panels contrast with the smoother rendered walls. Older outbuildings, stone boundaries and an arched carriage entrance preserve its agricultural setting. The 2007 survey recorded the house as disused and in poor repair; that description belongs to the survey date. [3]
