Place & story
Quarried blocks on a rising tide
Paddy Nolan’s account of Tullig describes brown stone blocks quarried from the cliffs towards the end of the nineteenth century. Workers loaded them onto a raft at the shore, waited for the tide to lift it, and towed the cargo to Ross Bay. Nolan identifies the stone’s destination as a retaining wall along the raised shore there. The account connects Tullig’s coastal landscape with both quarrying and transport by water. [2]
