Richard Boyle’s growing estate
Bandon developed from settlements on opposite sides of the river. Richard Boyle acquired an interest in the northern settlement in 1612, followed by market and fair rights at Coolfadda in 1613. He subsequently secured major interests on both banks. The town walls conservation plan places Bandon near the centre of the extensive lands he controlled by 1630, within a programme promoting trade, farming, mills and settlement.[2]
A town drawn and enclosed
Christopher Jefford’s 1613 plan records the intended form of Bandon Bridge. The walls embodied both the practical defence and political boundaries of the new settlement. Their surviving lengths are fragments of a much larger enclosure: the conservation study reconstructs the circuit through maps and documentary evidence. The town’s streets and later buildings preserve an urban layout whose origins reach back beyond their present façades.[2]
Early fabric behind later appearances
Christ Church, north of the river, was built in 1610. Its cruciform form acquired a western tower and spire in 1856. Deconsecrated in 1973, it became the West Cork Heritage Centre. The change of use preserved a building associated with the town’s early Protestant community.[3]
At 83 North Main Street, seventeenth-century timber framing survives behind a nineteenth-century façade. Tree-ring analysis dated the timbers to 1659–60. The county’s archaeological heritage account uses the house to illustrate how early urban buildings can remain embedded within later streetscapes, even where little outwardly resembles the original town.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
