Place & story

A chartered coastal town

Lewis’s account traces Clonakilty’s incorporation under James I to 1613 and the influence of Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork. The town lay in Kilgarriffe parish near its harbour. His historical narrative records severe disruption during seventeenth-century warfare, with inhabitants seeking protection at Bandon and fighting around the town. A further clash took place during the 1798 rebellion. [2]

Emmet Square’s museum house

Michael Collins House occupies Number 7 Emmet Square, a restored Georgian building acquired for a museum project conceived in 2012. Its displays place Collins alongside earlier local revolutionary figures, including Tadhg an Asna and Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. The museum uses artefacts and documentary interpretation to connect the town with the longer history of Irish independence. [3]

People & connections

Collins’s documented town connection

Collins lived on Emmet Square between 1903 and 1905. The museum’s own research has not conclusively identified the house he occupied, and it explicitly rejects the former attribution to Number 7. The square is therefore a genuine part of his early life, while the museum building has a separate, later commemorative role. This distinction matters in a place where a familiar house name can easily become an assumed address. [3]

A second museum, the Michael Collins Centre at Castleview outside Clonakilty, developed from Tim and Dolores Crowley’s work on their family farm. Founded in 2000, it interprets a family connection with Collins and the revolutionary period. The two institutions offer different settings for the region’s memory of him. [4]
