Place & story
The Victorian station building
Carrigaloe’s former station building dates from 1862. Red brick walls are edged with rusticated limestone corner stones, while a projecting gable marks the front. The architectural inventory records slate roofs, timber bargeboards and carved stone details on the chimney. Even the smaller adjoining outbuilding has a decorative brick cornice. These materials and details give the modest station a character shared with other railway buildings of its period. [2]
A surviving railway group
The station building belongs to a wider group that includes a stationmaster’s house, a footbridge and railway bridges farther south. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage recorded the old building as disused in its 2007 survey. That description concerns the building: Carrigaloe remains a passenger stop on the Cork–Cobh route, listed by Iarnród Éireann as an unstaffed station. The distinction matters in a place where Victorian railway fabric and a working rail service coexist. [2] [3]
The return of the car ferry
A National Library of Ireland photograph taken by Edward Lalor on 5 September 1993 records the recently established Glenbrook–Carrigaloe car ferry. Its contemporary catalogue account, researched by Tim Cadogan, dates the renewed service to Easter 1993 after an absence of several decades. Two vessels, named Glenbrook and Carrigaloe, operated the crossing. The same record traces the original grant of a ferry at this point to 1611, connecting the modern service with a much older harbour route. [4]
