Place & story

A school beside the church

The diocesan account of Saint Luke's National School traces schooling on its Churchyard Lane site to the eighteenth century. The school entered the national education system in 1880. Its present building dates from 1980, with an extension and upgrading in 2002. Standing beside the church and parish hall, it maintains an educational use across several generations of buildings rather than preserving a single unchanged schoolhouse. [2]

The sexton’s home

A house built in 1879 within the graveyard housed the sexton responsible for its care. The architectural survey records an L-shaped building with an attic, projecting gables and bay windows. Carved timber bargeboards, finials and brackets give it a different character from the stone church. Its adjoining outbuildings and position northeast of Saint Luke's preserve evidence of a resident caretaker's place within the burial-ground complex. [3]

Churchyard Lane divides the burials

The local heritage trail describes a substantial rearrangement of burial space during the 1870s. Earlier maps showed graves extending east and west of the old church, with a watch-house in the eastern section beyond Churchyard Lane. By the 1890s, maps showed separate cemeteries on either side of the road. Vestry minutes record part of the original ground passing to the Poor Law authorities, connecting the visible division with changes following Church of Ireland disestablishment. [4]
