Place & story

Racing from the Sand Quay

The Munster Model Yacht Club was founded at Monkstown’s Imperial Hotel in August 1872, with Captain David Gould as its first commodore. It rented storage space for sailing gear and part of the Sand Quay, organising races for boats of different sizes. Its first regatta followed in August 1873, concluding with a fireworks display. The club’s history preserves the quay’s role as a working base for organised recreation. [2]

A new club in 1970

Monkstown Bay Sailing Club dates its foundation to 7 June 1970 and its first annual general meeting to 5 February 1971. Norcott d’Esterre Roberts became commodore, with Robert Cuppage, Dick Woodley, Barry O’Connell, Jack O’Driscoll and William O’Brien among the founders. Its burgee recalls the earlier Munster Model Yacht Club, giving the newer organisation a visible connection with the bay’s nineteenth-century sailing history. [2]

The practical harbour pier

Monkstown’s pier served transport across Cork Harbour to Great Island and other destinations. The architectural inventory dates its limestone core to about 1870 and records later concrete surfaces and parapets. A timber section extends eastwards on piles, fastened with copper and iron nails. This modest landing place complements the waterfront’s recreational history with evidence of everyday movement around the harbour. [3]
