Place & story

John Henry’s mill

The large mill at Millbrook carries a plaque identifying John Henry as its builder in 1774. Six storeys high, it has a projecting central section topped by a bellcote. The architectural inventory records an arched opening that formerly accommodated the waterwheel, with traces of its movement visible in lime deposits. A smaller mill and associated buildings formed part of the same industrial complex. [2]

Housing for the workforce

The mills also shaped the village's housing. Two pairs of stone houses, built around 1860, have projecting gabled porches and Gothic Revival details. The architectural inventory identifies them, together with a nearby terrace, as accommodation provided for mill workers. Their slate roofs, stone chimney stacks and mouldings above the windows show attention to the appearance of industrial housing as well as its practical purpose. [3]

The Millbrook team

Millbrook entered the Meath Junior Football Championship in 1947 and continued until amalgamating with Oldcastle in the early 1960s. Eddie O'Reilly's account, preserved in the club history, recalls practice at a sportsfield in Crossdrum, first in blue jerseys and later black and amber. Jimmy Halpin captained the side and was part of Meath's All-Ireland minor championship team in 1957. [4]
