Place & story
New farmhouses and plantations
Samuel Lewis's 1837 description records more than fifty substantial farmhouses and cottages recently erected across the Castleisland district. Lord Headley provided stipulated allowances towards their construction. Drainage and fencing accompanied the building programme, while plantations covered about 350 acres. These improvements belong to the parish's wider agricultural landscape, beyond the market street, and show investment in both cultivation and the buildings used by farming households. [2]
A missed nomination changes the living
The Church of Ireland living had previously been united with Ballincuslane, Dysert and Killintierna. Lewis explains that, after an incumbent died, the proprietors failed to nominate his successor within the permitted time. The presentation therefore passed to the bishop, who divided the union into three benefices. The separation was confirmed on 4 January 1836, leaving Castleisland, Ballincuslane and Dysert with Killintierna as distinct arrangements. [2]
A chapel funded with the tenants
At Knocknagashel, in the parish's northern part, a Catholic chapel was erected in 1834 on land given by Lord Headley. Lewis records the cost being shared equally between the landlord and his tenants in that district. A further chapel at Scartaglin served the southern area. His account illustrates how worship was distributed through several settlements, with building projects drawing on different combinations of local resources. [2]
