Place & story

The old school’s second life

Glenmore National School was built in 1893 and later became a museum and heritage centre. Local visitor information identifies it as Teach Bhríde, run by the community, on the route leading inland from Waterville beside the lakes. Its reuse gives a former place of primary education a continuing role in preserving and explaining the valley’s past. The school building remains a recognisable landmark in accounts of the area. [2] [3]

An older woodland landscape

A September 2007 botanical survey recorded eleven hectares of woodland at Graigues and Tooreenyduneen, on slopes crossed by streams flowing into Isknagahiny Lough. Sessile oak dominated, with birch, holly and hazel also present. The survey confirmed woodland on the nineteenth-century maps and recorded Irish spurge, St Patrick’s cabbage and Wilson’s filmy fern. It also noted sheep grazing and sheltering among the trees, documenting the overlap between woodland habitat and the surrounding farming landscape. [4]

Glanmore in an early walking account

C. P. Crane’s 1907 guide to Kerry describes the approach to Glenmore along the southern side of Lough Currane and beside Isknagahiny Lake. Beyond the road, he found a rough track reaching farmhouses with fuchsia hedges, followed by a narrow mountain route towards Sneem. The account records a valley connected to its neighbours by paths as well as roads, and offers an early visitor’s description of its inhabited landscape. [5]
