Place & story

The school of 1898

The former Presentation Convent National School in Chapel Quarter bears an 1898 date. Its H-shaped plan places gabled classroom wings around a recessed centre. Rough limestone walls contrast with red-brick corners and window arches; the front gables have groups of three rounded windows. Slate roofs, carved limestone details and iron entrance gates complete an architectural ensemble whose inscription still identifies its original educational purpose. [2]

Charter-school fabric within Castleview

Castleview House at Knockananlig incorporates fabric from a charter school dated 1750. The house took shape around 1850 and was altered again around 1900, when a Dutch-gabled wing and ornamental plasterwork were added. Its entrance loggia supports a balustraded balcony, and later extensions changed the plan further. The National Inventory’s account distinguishes these successive phases, rather than treating the whole residence as a single eighteenth-century school building. [3]

A library rebuilt with a courtroom

Castleisland District Heritage traces the Carnegie Library proposal to William Hugh O’Connor’s intervention at a rural district council meeting in 1910. Andrew Carnegie’s grant supplied £1,500 for construction. After destruction, rebuilding began in 1928, incorporating a district court as well as library and hall space. An opening dance followed on 25 February 1930. The hall subsequently accommodated lectures, meetings and amateur drama alongside its lending-library role. [4]
