Place & story
From the old school to 1939
Kilcummin National School's history records a school at Clashnagarrane on maps dating from 1837. Teaching later moved to another building, subsequently associated with the parish's rural development office. The present school was built in 1939 with two classrooms, initially divided into separate sections for boys and girls. [2]
A photograph of the new building
The National Library holds a 1942 Irish Tourist Association photograph catalogued as the new model national school at Kilcummin. Recorded as a small black-and-white negative, it documents the school shortly after the construction date given in its own history. The catalogue identifies the location as County Kerry, distinguishing it from schools with the same name elsewhere. [3]
Extensions for later generations
The school expanded from two classrooms to four in 1990. Its account records a further need for two rooms in 2015, followed by the opening of an accessible classroom in 2020. The neighbouring parish hall and a sports hall also became part of its facilities, extending the spaces available beyond the original schoolrooms. [2]
