Place & story
A small school and its succession
Pete Coghlan’s parish history dates Gortnascarry National School to 1896. Its first teacher was Mrs Cashman, née Foley, from Brookhill. John Coffey of Carubeg succeeded her in 1932, followed by Maureen Clifford of Cullina in 1962. In 1969 the school closed, and its teacher and pupils transferred by bus to Kilgobnet National School. The sequence preserves the names behind a small district school and identifies the final consolidation with its neighbour. [2]
