Place & story
Moneen Quay
Moneen Quay, also called Lynch's Quay, was built in the 1820s at the head of Lough Atalia, principally for landing turf and seaweed. In his account of Noel Wilkins's research on western piers, Tom Kenny identifies the neighbouring Lynch family of Renmore as its main financial supporters. The quay stood beside their residence, Renmore Lodge, later used by Holy Family School. It records a working shoreline connected with the city's supply of fuel and agricultural materials. [2]
The college opens
Moneenageisha Community College opened in September 1969. A colleague's appreciation of Noel Carpenter, published in TUI News in 2012, records him as its first science and mathematics teacher. He came from Loughrea Vocational School and remained at Moneenageisha until his retirement in 2003. His career provides a named link across the college's first three decades, complementing later accounts of its expansion into further education under the name Galway Community College. [3] [4]
Noel Carpenter and school sport
Carpenter also devoted time to coaching the college's pupils and promoting school rugby. Before teaching at Moneenageisha, he had played rugby for Galwegians, University College Galway and Connacht, serving as Connacht's full-back during 1960–65. He also won two Collingwood Cups in university soccer. His work with young players extended beyond the college: in 1987 he was appointed assistant manager of the Irish Schools rugby tour to Australia. [3]
