Place & story

A Carhoo boatman in the 1902 news

A Kerry News report of 11 July 1902, reproduced by local historian Ted Creedon, records the drowning of Patrick Fenton of Carhoo, Dunquin. He had been helping transport sheep from the Blasket Islands to the mainland. After that work, the canoe struck a rock on a short onward passage and Fenton was thrown into the sea. The report connects a named Carhoo resident with the everyday movement of livestock between islands and mainland. [2]

The nearby village built for Ryan’s Daughter

Northeast of Carhoo, within Ferriters-quarter, the fictional village of Kirrary was built for Ryan’s Daughter. Local workers joined professional set builders, and Fitzgeralds supplied construction materials. The film-location project records that keeping the set as a tourist attraction was considered but rejected after production. The cobbled village street survived, preserving part of a temporary screen settlement on the slopes below Cruach Mhárthain. [3]

The older church at nearby Dunquin

Nearby Dunquin’s old church and graveyard are in Ballintemple, a separate townland. The 2010 archaeological survey distinguishes this location from nineteenth-century records calling it Churchquarter or Carhoo Church Quarter. It records a medieval font transferred to the adjoining Catholic church, built around 1857. The older graveyard also contains Tomás Ó Criomhthain’s 1937 burial, whose headstone depicts islanders rowing a naomhóg. [4]
