Place & story
A mainland home for island history
Ionad an Bhlascaoid, the Blasket Centre, stands in Dunquin with views towards the Blasket Islands. Its exhibitions were renewed in 2022, and a clifftop viewing platform connects the displays inside with the islands and Atlantic coastline outside. The centre brings together the community’s language, working life and literature. [2]
Remembering a departed community
The centre follows the story of families who made a living from fishing and farming on the Blaskets. Emigration and a shrinking population preceded the evacuation of the Great Blasket in 1953. Books written by islanders recorded the community’s experiences in Irish; those works form a central part of the legacy interpreted at Dunquin. [2]
