Place & story
The Sale family at Clonmeen
Kevin Guing’s documentary study identifies Clonmeen near Carrick Hill as the home area of the Sale family before their emigration in 1849. He reproduces an outrage report naming Joseph Sale at Clonmeen, Carrick parish: unknown people had scattered his hay and driven cattle into a cornfield. Guing suggests intimidation may have influenced the family’s departure, but treats that explanation as uncertain. [2]
Thomas Sale in America
The family settled in Philadelphia. Guing connects their son Thomas with the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry, which he joined in August 1862. He was captured at Dandridge, Tennessee, in December 1863. The connection gives this small Kildare locality a documented place in the wider history of Irish emigration and American military service. [2]
