Place & story

The mainland home of a monastic community

The Augustinian priory at Ballinskelligs became a mainland home for the religious community associated with Skellig Michael. Its surviving architecture spans the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. Church buildings and a refectory are arranged around the former cloister, while the nave connects with a rectangular building known as the Prior’s House. Coastal erosion has removed parts of the priory and graveyard over the centuries; a sea wall now protects the remaining complex at the edge of the bay. [2]

A small tower house beside the shore

Excavations in 1988 and 1991 exposed Ballinskelligs Castle’s paving beneath storm deposits. The three-storey tower retains sandstone doorway dressings and a murder-hole; its MacCarthy ownership is recorded as tradition. [3]

A competing route across the Atlantic

The Direct United States Cable Company established its Ballinskelligs station in 1874. Using the Siemens cable ship Faraday, it laid a route towards Rye Beach in the United States through Nova Scotia, completing the main Atlantic connection in September 1875 after repeated difficulties. Later linked to Valentia’s station, Ballinskelligs closed in 1923 and passed to the Irish State. Its main station building subsequently served as an Irish-language college before demolition; the superintendent’s house and other buildings survived. [4]
