Place & story

Two centuries of the Sacred Heart church

The Church of the Sacred Heart serves Ballyhar within Firies parish. A community announcement in June 2026 marked its two-hundredth anniversary, with a celebratory Mass arranged for 21 June and a commemorative book prepared for the occasion. The anniversary placed the church’s history alongside the memories of the people who have sustained worship there across generations. [2] [3]

Agricultural distress in 1880

Even the good farmland around Ballyhar offered little protection from the agricultural depression of 1879–80. Historian Donnacha Seán Lucey records that up to fifty families in the wider Firies and Ballyhar region needed relief in January 1880. Larger farmers, short of ready money, reduced their employment of labourers. Letters from the Firies relief committee also described small farmers concealing their hunger rather than publicly seeking assistance, showing how distress extended beyond the poorest coastal districts. [4]

Football at Murt Scott Park

Ballyhar Dynamos celebrated fifty years with a community day at Murt Scott Park in August 2025. The programme honoured founding members and brought former players together for a reunion match, alongside activities for children and younger teams. Reporting on the occasion described a club with almost three hundred members, from young children to senior players. The celebration showed how the football ground had become a shared meeting place for successive generations. [5]
