Place & story

The lighthouse before the railway village

Greenore Point's lighthouse was built in 1830 by George Halpin senior. Its circular tower tapers upwards to a lantern surrounded by a railed walkway. The architectural survey records ashlar stonework and a circular granite staircase inside, together with surviving cast-iron details. The tower shares grounds with the former keeper's house. This early maritime group predates the later railway-related buildings that gave Greenore much of its distinctive village character. [2]

A co-operative for the workforce

The Greenore Co-operative Society building on Euston Street was built about 1880 to serve port and railway workers. Its limestone walls contrast with red-brick bands and terracotta decoration, while the society's name appears prominently on the frontage. Inside, cast-iron columns support steel joists, and a timber-trussed hall occupies the first floor. The heritage survey recorded shop and café uses below that community space, showing how the building combined commercial and social functions. [3]

Education on Euston Street

The former national school is dated 1873 and was provided for workers' children. Like the co-operative building nearby, it combines limestone walls with red-brick detailing. Paired windows, decorative iron door hinges and a timber-trussed ceiling reflect the care given to its construction. The architectural inventory later recorded its conversion to a public house, noting the survival of much original character. Its changing use forms another chapter in the life of the railway village.
