Place & story
The landscape recorded in 1840
The Ordnance Survey’s 1840 field-name book describes Irishtown as a sixty-two-acre townland, chiefly occupied by buildings forming part of Limerick city. Some ground remained cultivated: the survey lists potatoes, corn, wheat and flax growing in its deep soil. It places Irishtown at the western end of Saint John’s parish, beside Monamuck and Mill-alee. The entry records agricultural plots within an already predominantly built-up townland. [2]
